He currently works at the Royal London Hospital as consultant Surgeon. Mr Hadjianastassiou upgraded the surgical services, by introducing for the first time the techniques of Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy, Blood Group Incompatible Kidney Transplantation and Pancreatic Transplantation and for the first time in the Public Sector. Since then the Transplant Unit he founded has been the sole provider of transplant services in the Republic of Cyprus. In the 9 years that Professor Hadjianastassiou operated in Cyprus as the sole transplant surgeon, he personally transplanted 216 patients with the loss of only 12 grafts. He also introduced the first carotid endarterectomy under local anaesthesia and the first fenestrated EVAR for complex abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. He contributed to 56 research papers and reputable publications.
Professor Vassilis Hadjianastassiou graduated from the Medical School of the University of Oxford, where he also completed his doctoral thesis in abdominal aortic aneurysms. He holds dual GMC accreditation in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery, having completed his specialist surgical training at the Oxford and London Deaneries.
He was appointed Consultant Surgeon at Guy's & St. Thomas' NHS Hospitals in 2007, where he also served as the Clinical Lead for pancreas transplantation. In 2011 he was recruited by the Cyprus Ministry of Health to restructure the system of Organ Transplantation in Cyprus and became the founding Medical Director of Transplantation there. He also served for 2 years as one of the two appointed experts in Vascular Surgery on the Government’s Advisory Committee.
Since 2013 he has held the position of full-time Clinical Professor of Surgery of the University of Nicosia Medical School. He has given numerous lectures in international meetings and has a significant number of scientific publications.
He introduced the first carotid endarterectomy under local anaesthesia, pancreatic organ transplant and laparoscopic donor nephrectomy as well as the first blood group incompatible kidney transplant and the first fenestrated EVAR for complex abdominal aortic aneurysm repair in the advisory committee.
