Dr. Cernat is a Consultant Pediatric Gastroenterologist with a special interest in Nutrition, Intestinal Failure, and Rehabilitation, currently based at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. She has over 10 years of experience in pediatric gastroenterology and is a member of several professional organizations, including the British Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (BSPGHAN) and the European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN). She has published several papers in peer-reviewed journals. Her research interests include short bowel syndrome, intestinal failure, pediatric coeliac disease, and inflammatory bowel disease.
Dr. Elena Cernat is a consultant in Pediatric Gastroenterology in the UK with a special interest in Nutrition, Intestinal Failure and Rehabilitation. She is affiliated with Leeds Teaching Hospitals and is a member of the British, Spanish and
European Societies of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. She has trained in various hospitals across Europe and the US including La Fe University Hospital (Valencia, Spain), Comer Children’s Hospital (Chicago, USA), Great Ormond Street Hospital (London, UK), and King’s College Hospital (London, UK).
She received her training in pediatrics in Spain. She continued her training in pediatric gastroenterology and since 2018, she has been a substantive consultant in Pediatric Gastroenterology at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Leeds, UK. With more than 13 years of practice, Doctor Cernat has enormous experience in treating children with any aspect of gastrointestinal diseases with a specialized interest in treating patients with intestinal failure using the most up-to-date treatment methods and best practice guidelines available internationally and in the UK.
Dr. Cernat is an Associate Member of the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health and holds the role of Research representative of the Nutrition and Intestinal Failure Working Group of the BSPGHAN (British Society of the Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition) since March 2021 and is a member of the ESPGHAN (European Society of the Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition) Education Committee since September 2020.
Doctor Cernat has also contributed to improving the practice of medicine through several published research papers in top scientific journals and presentations at international conferences. Including but not limited to research concerning short bowel syndrome in infants, the effects of parenteral nutrition on children, pediatric celiac disease, and inflammatory bowel diseases in children.
She also received the Young Investigator Award from the European
Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition in 2017 and again in 2018 for her research efforts.
