Prof Mirza was appointed Consultant of Hepatic, Pancreas, and Hepatobiliary (HPB) Surgery and Transplant Surgeon at University of Birmingham, UK in 1996. He also has a special interest in surgery for liver, pancreas, and bile duct cancer. In addition, he specializes in liver and intestinal transplant surgeries. He is also a member of the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS). He has published over 350 peer-reviewed papers.
Prof. Darius Mirza studied Medicine at the University of Bombay. After early surgical training in India and a two-year Transplant Fellowship at the University of Vienna Hospital, he came to Birmingham in 1991 to train further in adult and paediatric transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery.
He was appointed as Consultant Transplant Surgeon at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne in 1996 before moving back to Birmingham when he was appointed as a Consultant Transplant and Hepatic, Pancreas and Biliary (HPB) Surgeon at Queen Elizabeth and Children’s Hospitals, Birmingham in 1997. His experience extends for more than 35 years.
In addition to liver transplantation, his clinical and research interests lie in the areas of “marginal” donors, technical innovations (split livers, transplantation for intestinal failure), biliary strictures and metastatic liver cancer. He is a well-known international speaker, and an active researcher and has published over 350 peer-reviewed papers.
