Dr Ponnusamy is a Consultant Nephrologist with over 20 years of experience. He has acquired various subspecialty experiences in nephrology during his current position as a consultant and an honorary senior lecturer at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
He has always helped improve the quality of care for renal patients by introducing the "Code Red" project and the Dialysis Catheter Safety checklist.
He has contributed to 59 research projects and he is an examiner at the University of Manchester, the Royal College of Physicians and the General Medical Council.
Dr Ponnusamy is currently a Consultant Nephrologist and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, the University of Manchester, UK.
He has acquired various subspecialty experiences in nephrology during his current position and his previous positions at multiple prestigious hospitals at the NHS foundation.
Dr Ponnusamy has always paid special attention to the improvement of the quality of care. He introduced the term "Code Red" to help recognise the need to respond to acute unwell adults in a timely fashion. As a response to this triage system, the cardiac arrest rate was reduced by 70 percent. This project was adapted across the trust and is still successfully implemented.
He has also introduced a catheter safety checklist to reduce the potential for human error and improve the process of central line insertion. This showed a significant reduction in the number of complications related to dialysis line catheter insertion in our unit.
Dr Ponuusamy has contributed to 59 research projects including articles published in national and international journals, conference papers, posters and book chapters
He is an examiner for the MRCP PACES examination at the Royal College of Physicians, an examiner for PLAB (exam undertaken to qualify overseas Doctors) by the General Medical Council and an OSCE examiner for medical students of the University of Manchester. He has also developed and implemented a regular teaching programme for the junior medical staff undertaking PACES examinations and year 5 medical students.
